Do I have to replace all four tires?

Only if all four have worn evenly or your vehicle is all-wheel drive, where mismatched tread can strain the drivetrain. If two tires are still deep and the other two are worn, replacing just the worn pair — matched to the same size and tread pattern — is usually enough on front- or rear-wheel-drive vehicles.

Why does all-wheel drive change the math?

An AWD system expects all four tires to roll at very close to the same diameter. Mismatched tread depth means the worn tires spin faster than the newer ones, and the system reads that as slip — it works to correct for it constantly, which loads up the drivetrain over time in a way it wasn't designed for. That's the one case where two-tire replacement usually isn't the right call.

What about front-wheel or rear-wheel drive?

Replacing in axle pairs is standard practice here. The newer pair typically goes on the rear axle regardless of which wheels drive the car — more tread in the rear resists hydroplaning and loss of control in wet conditions better than more tread up front does.

Can the new pair be a different brand than what's already on the car?

They should at least match in size and tread pattern within the pair going on together. Pairing two different tread patterns on the same axle changes how each side grips, which is a small thing until it isn't.

What if I'd rather just do all four and not think about it again?

That's never the wrong call — it resets the whole conversation and takes the mismatch question off the table. It's just not the only option most of the time, and Detroit Tire Shop will say so rather than sell a full set when two tires do the job.

How much tread difference between old and new tires is too much?

There's no single number that applies to every vehicle — it comes down to how worn the older pair already is. The shop should measure the actual tread depth on all four before recommending a two-tire or four-tire replacement, not estimate it by eye.

Does replacing only two tires affect my vehicle's warranty?

Not the tires' own warranty, but check your vehicle's drivetrain warranty terms if it's AWD — some manufacturers require matched tires to keep that coverage intact, and that's a condition set by the automaker, not the tire shop.

Which axle should get the newer tires?

The rear axle, in almost every passenger vehicle, regardless of whether it's the front or rear wheels doing the driving. It's about keeping control in the rain, not about which wheels pull the car forward.
